THE MIRACLE OF HEARING CONTINUED....
IMAGINE HEARING A BIRD SING, THE OCEANS CRASH OR THE WHISPER OF "I LOVE YOU" FOR THE FIRST TIME!
Eleven year old Romina was born without properly formed ears. In 2011 Romina was brought to the attention of HKIE.
At that point HKIE had not been formed, so a small private group purchased audio phone to help her hearing. The school was ready to release her as she could not hear well enough to attend. With the audio phones and speech therapy she was allowed to continue in school, but still with only 40% hearing with the audio phones.

Throughout the past year, HKIE has worked with cochlear suppliers, doctors and hospitals to provide Romina with a cochlear implant. Thanks to Adrian Serrano of Salud Auditiva Ecuador, Dr. Pablo Salamea, Dr Diego Maldonado of Hospital del Rio, and Hospital Del Rio itself, Romina has her cochlear implant!
We wish you could see and witness how happy this family is today. For them it is a dream of a lifetime and doesn't seem real. When visiting the other day, Romina was cute and adorable as always. She asked her parents why they were yelling...as there was no need because she could hear them perfectly! She jumped when the dog barked. She is enamored with hearing birds sing, the sound of the ocean, the explosion of fireworks and EVERYTHING she has never heard before.

Because of HKIE's relationship with the hospitals and the heartfelt generosity of the surgeons, The entire process cost HKIE around $1200.00
Salud Auditiva of Clinica Latino discounted the very expensive, stateof the art hearing device by 67% and the balance was paid by a private donor.
Dr Diego Maldonado stated the joy and excitement on Romina's face, both before and after her surgery, was payment enough for him!.
