After receiving her cochlear implant last month to enable Romina to finally hear, now she is embarking on a new venture: to actually have real ears!
The first picture is the "ear " Romina was born with. After years of teasing and frustration she will, after a series of 5 total surgeries have normal ears. The second picture is the result of her first three hour surgery...already a remarkable improvement with more shaping to come!
Dr Fernando Quintana of Guayaquil is considered one of South America's foremost surgeons in ear reconstruction. The surgery was done at his private clinic. He was assisted by HKIE's medical director, Dr Pablo Javier Salamea Molina and a team of fine doctors and nurses.
Dr, Quintana and Dr Pablo both volunteered their services to lower the cost for HKIE and to help Romina have a normal life.
