Both of these boys were diagnosed a year ago with a cancerous tumor in their thighs.
Both went through a year of chemotherapy at a local Quito hospital. Following the successful chemo treatments the normal approach was to then amputate the leg.
Hearing about these two patients, Doctor Zumarraga wanted to prevent the amputation so brought the two boys to the attention of Fundación Metrofraternidad , Hospital Metropolitano Quito and to HKIE.
Dr. Zumarraga performed 2 delicate 8 hour back to back surgeries: the piece of bone with the original tumor was cut out, the remaining bone area washed to ensure no spread of any cancer and a rod was inserted in the leg to replace the piece of bone.
Angel and Carlos will now undergo 12 sessions of PT but no further treatment will be necessary.
These two fortunate boys will not be forced to live with an amputation!...but will have normal lives thanks to Dr. Zumarraga, Hospital Metropolitano, Fundación Metrofraternidad and our HKIE donors!
