This surgery represents the riskiest and most complicated surgery sponsored by Helping Kids In Ecuador's existence as a Foundation.
This surgery was preformed by a team of 6 surgeons at Hospital del Rio in Cuenca.
17 year old Brian, who was valedictorian of his class and wants to become a doctor, had a large, rapidly growing tumor behind his nose. It was threatening both his optic nerve and his brain.
He needed a two part surgery.
In the first one ,the doctors cut the arterial supply to the tumor.
In the next, they operated to remove the tumor.
As one doctor stated, "it is extremely delicate and risky, but without it he could die any day".
The surgery to remove the tumor was over 5 hours long and had a few unexpected complications.
However the team of 6 volunteer surgeons (Dr. Diego Maldonado, Dra Andrea Astudillo, Dr Santiago Reinoso, Dr Aurelio Maldonado, Dr Juan Carlos Salamea, and Dr Enrique Viteri) successfully removed the entire tumor.
We won't declare a total victory until he walks out of the hospital but the prognosis is very good and hopefully he will now be able to live a long, heathly productive life!
We want to thank Dr. Pablo Salamea for coordinating this entire surgery between Hospital del Rio's administrator and the surgical teams!
And thanks of course to all who donated and kept Brian in their thoughts and prayers. Please continue to do so until this brave young man leaves the hospital.
