This is 1 1/2 year old Maria Paz.
We met her over a year ago when she came to Dr. Pablo Salamea to have her lip repaired.

This week she returned to have her cleft palate fixed by Dr. Pablo.

She is a real cutie and her mom is thrilled her precious little girl can grow up normally.
A big thanks to Dr. Pablo our medical director, Hospital del Rio and again, our generous donors who made this possible!

See her before and after pictures! What a cutie!!

Our patient 638 is 15 year old Jordan who lost his leg to cancer at the age of 4.

He received a prosthetic leg but of course after all these years he needed a new one to fit correctly.

Jordan is now a proud owner of a new leg and he is so very grateful.

A shout of thanks to Protesis Imbabura in Ibarra, for their wonderful work and to Luis Galarza for arranging the transportation and appointment and of course our loyal donors who make all this possible!

CHILDREN 630 TO 637 WERE EYE SURGERY PATIENTS FROM FUNDACION METROFRATERNIDAD IN QUITO

A few weeks ago HKIE our Foundation was able to visit with the heads of Fundación Metrofraternidad in Quito.
We have worked with them for about 7 years (since the heart surgery of Daniel), but had never met them in person.
We were given a full tour of the hospital including the surgical rooms; it is a very modern and updated facility.
While there, we were asked to help with their Ophthamology Brigade that took place this weekend.
Eye surgeries were performed on 8 children ( patient# 630 to 637) most of the surgeries were for congenital cataracts with a couple "lazy eyes".
Pictured are some of the children and also the hospital facilities.

Thank you to our donors, without whom we would not be able to provide these life changing surgeries to these children.

You can just imagine how thankful the kids and their families are knowing they will now go through life with normal vision!

He had previous surgery to repair his eye which was not successful.
He is basically blind in his left eye.

Dr. Torres provided him with special drops in the hopes of preventing shrinkage of the eye, thereby allowing him to keep it.

When they return in 3 months the doctors will evaluate the results, if not good they will need to remove the eye and HKIE will provide him with a prosthetic eye.

Children who would not be helped without the generosity of the doctors, hospitals and of course, you, our donors.

Thanks!

Our child 628 is 8 year old Jazmin who was referred to us by Hogar de Esperanza.

The nutritionist at Hogar wanted a second opinion regarding Jazmin's severe food allergies. Dra Jaramillo examined Jazmin and ordered some further tests.

She is at the very lowest end of the weight chart for her age which can become critical when she gets her growth spurt. The two nutritionists will work together to get a diet which will help her grow and absorb food better.

Our 6 year old Child is Mario who was born deaf he is our patient 627.

He received a cochlear implant from the Public Health Ministry 5 years ago but unfortunately the outer apparatus has stopped functioning.

He is on the public health list for a new one but that may take one to two years.
Dr. Diego Maldonado contacted Salud Auditiva and yesterday and we took Mario's implant in to be repaired.

It will take a few months (it is repaired in Austria!), but Mario will be set for the next year or so until he receives his new implant.

Mario and his mother are so thankful he will be able to continue to hear!

Thanks to the doctors, Salud Auditiva, and mostly our donors' generosity which makes these little miracles possible.

These brothers had small needs from HKIE and we were happy to help.
We took them both to Casa Ortopedica. Diego needed custom insoles for his shoes.

Daniel took a spill on his moto and needed a rib brace and some pain reliever. Always happy to help. Especially happy when their Mom was busy with their Dad who was hospitalized for his Type 1 Diabetes. A lot going on at that house!

Your generous donations to HKIE helped make their lives just a little bit easier.

MEET OUR CHILD 623 ELIAN

10/15/2021

Our Child 623 is the first patient whose surgery was paid for by the generous donors who attended the Yapa Fest concert recently held at La Yunta in Cuenca.

There was a huge turnout and everyone enjoyed the great performances by all the bands.

6 month old Elian is from Saraguro. He had come to Cuenca for his cleft lip surgery several months ago but his surgery had to be delayed due to a cold.

Dr. Pablo Salamea Molina repaired this cute little guy's cleft lip. He will return for a follow up and we will get an after photo. The entire family is so very grateful to Hospital del Rio, Dr. Pablo and his team, and of course the donors who made this surgery possible!

About 10 months ago Emily began having severe headaches and convulsions.
Her family is from Latacunga, Cotopaxi Province, where she lives with her father and grandmother who had no access to good medical care.

Fortunately they were put in contact with Fundación Metrofraternidad who arranged a medical evaluation and set up her surgery.

After discovering Emily had a brain tumor the foundation reached out and asked if HKIE would help sponsor this surgery.
Of course we said yes!

Dra Laura Bottani performed a 5 hour surgery to remove the tumor which fortunately was benign. Emily now has an opportunity to live a long and normal life.
Special thanks to the folks at Fundación Metrofraternidad the doctors at Hospital Metropolitano who volunteered their skills, and to our donors who helped make this life saving surgery possible.
