As you can see, Genesis suffered from several tumors on her face. She was due to have her surgery several months ago but suffered from anemia so the surgery had to be postponed.
This past Thursday Genesis had her surgery to remove the tumors which were non cancerous at Roberto Gilbert Hospital in Guayaquil.
Mom reports that she is doing great! When Genesis is fully recovered from this surgery, she will have reconstructive surgery. We will post her follow up photos after the second surgery. Can you imagine how relieved her parents are that their child will be able to grow up without this disfigurement?
A big thank you to the doctors at Roberto Gilbert for helping this little girl live a normal life. And of course THANKS to our donors!

Our Child 747 is four month old Lema from the Quito area.

She had urgent heart surgery this past Thursday to close the duct between her two heart arteries. The Ductus Arteriosis ( between the aorta and the pulmonary artery) normally closes within days of birth.
When it does not , the heart needs to work twice as hard to pump blood correctly and very often the lungs become congested due to too much blood.
Thankfully the surgeons, led by Dr Jaime Pinto, at Hospital Metropolitano were able to repair this defect and now little Lema can live a normal, healthy life.
Thanks to the surgical teams at Hospital Metropolitano Quito for donating their services, to Fundación Metrofraternidad to our VERY loyal donors who made this surgery possible.

Three more children helped this month through the collaboration of Hospital Metropolitano, Fundacion Metrofraternidad and HKIE.
2 year old Adrian was born with glaucoma. He had surgery this month to preserve his eyesight and received glasses.
30 month old Elian suffers from retinoblastoma...a common childhood cancer of the eye. He had his corrective surgery and now has a chance to see like other children.
Don't you love Elian's smile!!
Last is 1 year old Liam (shown with his mom) who also suffers from congenital glaucoma. He is the only child of a teenage mom who could never have afforded this life changing surgery.
Three more children have received the gift of vision!
A huge thank you goes out to our very loyal donors!

This month Fundación Metrofraternidad and Hospital Metropolitano in Quito and our Foundation collaborated in 5 eye surgeries.
Here are the first two.
2 year old Dena suffered from Aphakia...a condition in which there is no lens in the eye. Without the surgery this condition causes blurry vision and inability to focus, plus faded color vision.
18 month old Erick suffered from the same condition. Both patients received artificial lenses.
Thanks to the surgeons at Hospital Metropolitano who donated their services, to Fundacion Metrofraternidad for their collaboration and of course, to our donors for giving these children the gift of vision allowing them to have normal, productive lives!

Soon after birth she contracted an infection which ate away most of her nose, including bone and cartilage.

Little Isabela has undergone several surgical reconstructive procedures with Dr. Pablo Salama Molina and Dra Mariela Siguencia at Hospital del Rio. Dr Paul Tanner, a visiting surgeon from The Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City Utah, crafted the final prosthetic for her nose. Amazing!

PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO!

Thank you Dr Tanner! As you can see, she now has beautiful fully functioning nose! Her mother is over the moon and is so very grateful to the doctors and the HKIE donors who have given her little one a chance at a normal life.
A huge thank you goes out to all three doctors for waiving their surgical fees and the hospital for their generous discounts for all the procedures.

This is 14 year old Wellington from Salinas , Santa Elena Province.

He was one of the first recipients of HKIE and Protesis Imbabura's collaboration over seven years ago.
Wellington outgrew and wore out his special brace so Monday he went to Ibarra to be fitted for a new brace that allows him not only to walk, but to run!
Wonderful job !

Thanks to our donors to make this possible.

Meet our Children 739 and 740.

Young Edison (739) is from La Libertad in the Santa Elena Province. He has cerebral palsy and is unable to get around on his own. This past week our coastal rep, Luis Galarza, delivered a special wheelchair to him. This will allow Edison to get out and enjoy other people and increase his quality of life. He and his mom are so appreciative of this gift.
Child 740 is 5 year old Juan David from Cuenca. He was born with congenital glaucoma and has already received ( through HKIE ) two surgeries to save his vision. He is basically blind in his left eye and the doctor and our foundation want to save his other eye.
This morning Dr. Andres Diaz Carrasco of Hospital del Rio performed two surgical procedures to improve the drainage in his right eye and also repaired the micro valve in his eye. This will hopefully save the vision in his one good eye. Dr. Diaz said all went well and
Juan David is recovering nicely. Obviously mom is so grateful that her son had this procedure.
A big thank you to Dr. Diaz for donating his services, to Hospital del Rio for their generous discount and of course to our donors for this miracle of vision.

This is 15 year old Juan Carlos form Cuenca. He had his right eye removed when he was very young due to congenital glaucoma.
Recently it was causing him pain to use his prosthetic eye.
Dra Elizabeth Pacheco of Hospital del Rio discovered the previous lining that was placed in his eye to enable him to use the prosthetic had degraded and become infected and the stitches were causing pain.
This past week Dra Elizabeth repaired Juan Carlos' eye socket, replacing the old membrane. The surgery went very well and Juan Carlos will be able to once again use the prosthetic eye for a more normal look. The prosthesis also keeps his facial features correctly aligned.
Thanks to Dra Pacheco for donating her services, to Hospital del Rio for their generous discount and to our donors who enable us to help these children.

Jessuany had (as you can see) a growth on the back of her head.
This past week, Dr Bottani from Hospital Metropolitano in Quito
performed a delicate surgery to remove the growth. After 3 days in intensive care, this sweet little one is recovering well.

The family is so very grateful to Helping kids in Ecuador, Fundación Metrofraternidad and Hospital Metropolitano for taking care of their little one.

As always, the surgeons at Metropolitano volunteer their skills and both foundations contribute to the cost.

Thanks to our donors for all you allow HKIE to do.
