This is Camila, pictured here with her mom and after surgery. Dr Pablo Javier Salamea Molina, performed her clef lip surgery at Hospital del Rio in Cuenca just last week. Her family is so very happy their child will grow up and be able to eat and speak normally.
When Camila gets older, She will need a cleft palate and a nose surgery.......HKIE, Dr Pablo and Hospital Del Rio will be there when the time comes!
...
Our friend and HKIE supporter, Linda Lewis, asked those who attended her birthday party this past Saturday to make a donation to HKIE in lieu of any gifts. Camila's surgery was paid for this morning from the donations!
Thank you HKIE supporters, Hospital Del Rio and Dr Pablo. As he always does, Dr Pablo waived his surgical fees and the hospital provided HKIE with a substantial discount.

Update from HKIE on Maylin

It's true, a picture is worth a thousand words. Here is Maylin, who has cerebral palsy, undergoing physical therapy. Her sister joins them to help and also to learn how she can help and encourage Maylin at home.

The family and their community just outside of Otavalo cannot thank everyone involved and our supporters enough for giving this opportunity to her!

As a way of saying thank you, the family gave one of the expats a 2 liter bottle of Coke and 30 eggs!

For the first time in her young life, the family truly believes that Maylin will one day be able to walk.

Additionally, it is truly a community effort. Several generous volunteers from the expat community take turns driving Maylin and her mom to the daily therapy sessions.

Update from HKIE. Pricilla is back home in La Entrada (near Olon on the coast}
Before she checked out of the hospital, Dr Pablo Javier Salamea Molina spent some time coaxing Pricilla to open and close her hand. As she has never before been able to do so, she was afraid she wouldn't be able to move her fingers. She and her family were thrilled to watch her fingers open and close!
Pricilla immediately looked up at Dr .Pablo and asked him: "How soon can I come back for my second... surgery?" She is one happy young lady!
She will return to Cuenca in 4 to 6 weeks for her next surgery.

Child #135 - Melanie Ramos was brought to Helping Kids in Ecuador's attention from an Ecuadorian Friend who resides in La Libertad. She has a condition called Loeffler's which affects the lungs and the heart. She is also experiencing blood problems which require her to take iron and vitamins every day. This condition also affects the cornea in her eyes. She needed to be fitted with special lenses which were provided by HKIE and because her family is extremely poor they could not afford to purchase the vitamins and iron that she is required to take every day. She has another appointment in Guayaquil at Roberto Gilbert Hospital on the 23rd with a specialist to determine what else can be done to help out this adorable 3 year old. We will keep you updated as to Melanie's condition.

What a difference one surgery makes! Priscilla's hand is starting to take shape as you can see from the before and after pictures.

Dr. Pablo Javier Salamea Molina (pictured here with Priscilla and two of Pablo's assistants: Dra Adrianna and Dra Charlotte.) performed the surgery last night. The family has been staying at the Emaus House and will return to La Entrada on Friday.

Then....only one month until the family returns for Priscilla's second surgery (out of a possible three surgeries). Both Priscilla and her parents are so excited that because of HKIE supporters their dream is coming true.

Priscilla, a 10 year old girl who lives on the coast in La Entrada, was brought to the attention of HKIE by Shell and Marsha Spivey who also live in La Entrada and are the owners of Villa De Los Suenos.
La Entrada is located just north of Olon.
Priscilla's mother told Marsha then when her daughter was around 5 years old they found her trying to use a pair of scissors to separate her fingers to make her hand look normal.
...
Pricilla and her mother will arrive in Cuenca by bus on Sunday afternoon and we will pick them up at the bus station and take them to the Emuas House where the family will stay while Priscilla has her first surgery.
The Emaus House is Cuenca's answer to the Ronald McDonald House in the US.
Dr Pablo Salamea Molina will performed the first of two or three surgeries to correct her hand.
We will update everyone after her first surgery that will take place on Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning.
