Update from HKIE..
Two weeks ago Anderson received his new prosthetic leg. The video shows him receiving his much needed physical therapy at the Marvin Jones School in Salinas. He will have many more PT sessions to learn how to bend his left knee so he can walk normally.
As you can imagine, Anderson and his family are very grateful that he now has his prosthetic leg which is pain free and will be able to function normally.
...
A huge thank you to all of our HKIE supporters for making this happen for Anderson.
Thank you Luis Galarza for the video.

This is Juan and Klever who received their cleft palate surgeries...performed by Dr. Pablo Javier Salamea Molina and Dr, Cristian Astudillo at Hospital Del Rio as part of the Association of Latin American Plastic Surgeon conference here in Cuenca (FILACP)

Klever, HKIE child #69, had his cleft lip surgery last August performed By Dr Pablo at Hospital Del Rio.

Both Klever and Juan were unable to speak clearly and had a very hard time eating due to the severity of the hole in their palate.

Thanks to these two doctors and our HKIE supporters these two young boys will now have a chance at a normal life!

Dr. Pablo Javier Salamea Molina and Dr.Cristian Astudillo, working with the Association of Latin American Plastic surgeons (FILACP) performed two life enhancing cleft lip surgeries yesterday at Hospital Del Rio in Cuenca. These were part of a three day marathon of surgeries to benefit the less fortunate children here in Ecuador.
As you can see from the one photo of Cristina (on left) was a difficult surgery, but she will now be able to have a normal life wi...th a beautiful smile. On the right is Javier who also will have a normal smile.
HKIE is proud to be part of this effort with Dr. Pablo and FILACP.

HKIE UPDATE: Child 129

Imagine being born without part of your leg. Imagine wanting to be like other children so much, you and your parents devise a prosthesis made out of a coke bottle and a stick!

That is exactly what Anderson and his parents did.

Thanks to Shari Sauer of Common Grounds in Salinas, Anderson's plight was brought to the attention of HKIE. Shari also facilitated the contact between HKIE and prosthesisimbabura.com in Ibarra.

Prosthesis Imbabura fitted Anderson with a leg and foot......now for the first time, with therapy he will truly be able to walk and play like the rest of his friends!

Thanks go to Prosthesis Imbabura, Shari Sauer, Mafer Proano (sister of Board of Director Luis Galarza who facilitated transportation and lodging), Melvin Jones School in Liberdad which will provide therapy, AND all the HKIE supporters who made this miracle possible!

This is Tupac, from Cotacachi, pictured with his family.

He has Strabisimus ("lazy eye") in both his eyes, making it virtually impossible to focus on anything. HKIE was able to get several tests performed on Tupac's eyes and procure a pair of glasses for him.

As you can see by the photo of him with his new glasses, we imagine he is thinking "Wow! What a world!"

The eye surgeon wants Tupac to wear his new glasses for 3 months to see if his condition improves enough to be able to avoid having two eye surgeries.

Thank you to our HKIE supporters and Hospital Metropolitano in Quito!

A special thank you goes out to Cynthia Lopez from Cotacachi for bringing Tupac to our attention and for coordinating his appointments and driving the family to the hospital.

Cynthia tells us the family was so appreciative that the medical staff treated them with the upmost respect and kindness while they were treating Tupac.

We will keep everyone updated on his progress.

Update from HKIE Child 126

This is Maylin, a 6 year old born with cerebral palsy. HKIE encountered her and her family on our trip to the Otavalo/Cotacachi area last month.

She recently had the casts removed from her legs...in an attempt to straighten them. We managed to contact a local physical therapist, Jazmin Encalde, who is happy to work with HKIE and Maylin and her family.

Maylin has her follow up with her doctor July 27 at which time he will issue the therapy orders and Maylin can begin her therapy. With lots of hard work on everyone's part, Maylin may soon be able to stand up and walk for the first time in her life!

Many thanks go to Elizabeth Anderson and Linda Blizzard for helping HKIE facilitate our efforts in this area.

And thanks to the continued support of all our followers HKIE can provide this therapy and also speech therapy for this little girl so full of joy.

Update from HKIE child 124 and child 125
This is the Mata Family. They were living in Manta when the earthquake hit. The mother and baby were in a hospital on the 5th floor and were stuck there for hours as rescue workers worked their way up to them. Thankfully the mother and baby were not injured.
The parents, Marvin and Samantha, decided to move to Cuenca to try to start a new life away from Manta.

Their two children, 5 year old Jon and 3 month old Amalie, both were sick when they arrived in Cuenca. Jon had a bad chest infection along with breathing problems. Amalie was vomiting and unable to keep any food down.
They both have been seen Dr. Niera at Hospital Del Rio and the proper medications were purchased for both kids.
We are happy to report both children are back to normal.

Dr. Niera wanted Dr.Luis Rojas to examine Amalie and review an xray of her left hip to check for any abnormalties. Dr Rojas feels her hip growth is normal but ordered another hip xray in 2 months just to be sure.

The Mata family is staying with Gary Vatcher. Gary has generously allowed the family to stay at Hogar de La Esperanza Cuenca while Marvin looks for work and can move his family to a new home. Thank you Gary!
